Sourav Mukherjee: From the green-and-maroon days of Mohun Bagan to the rising tides of Diamond Harbour FC, Spanish football coach Kibu Vicuna has journeyed deep into the heart of Indian football — and deeper still into Bengal’s soul. Whether it’s savoring a plate of mutton biryani or soaking in the serenity of the Sundarbans, Kibu’s bond with the region is both professional and personal.
Currently at the helm of Diamond Harbour FC, Vicuna has seen both the glamour of championship glory and the gritty grind of grassroots football. Yet, Mohun Bagan — with whom he lifted the I-League title five years ago — continues to hold a special place in his heart.
In an exclusive interview with Ray Sportz, Kibu opened up about his journey in Indian football, his goals, and his affection for all things Bengali.
Ray Sportz: From I-League 3 to the main stage of I-League — how tough was the fight?
Kibu Vicuna: It has been a joyful and exciting campaign. We began our journey in the first division of the Kolkata League. Our long-term vision has always been to reach the ISL. Slowly but surely, we are moving towards that dream. But the road ahead remains challenging.

Ray Sportz: You’ve won the I-League with Mohun Bagan and now the second division with Diamond Harbour FC. Which one is closer to your heart?
Kibu Vicuna: Both moments are special, though they are different experiences. Winning the I-League with Mohun Bagan was unforgettable — a moment etched in my memory. But now, I’m fully focused on enjoying this new chapter with Diamond Harbour FC.

Ray Sportz: What’s the goal for the upcoming season?
Kibu Vicuna: Our sights are set on the ISL, but before that, we have the Kolkata League to focus on. Our main goal right now is to build the best possible team — one where there’s no divide between senior and junior players. Unity is key.

Ray Sportz: Diamond Harbour FC is currently one of the most talked-about clubs in Indian football. What’s the secret behind this success?
Kibu Vicuna: We’re working with a clear, well-defined plan. From the management to the players, everyone is aligned with that vision. The real mantra, though, is team cohesion. That’s the heart of our success.

Ray Sportz: A lighter question — what’s your favorite Indian food and favorite place to visit?
Kibu Vicuna: (Smiling) I love Kolkata’s mutton biryani — it’s absolutely delicious. I also enjoy masala dosa and can’t start my day without a cup of milk tea. As for travel, Kalimpong and the Sundarbans are my top picks. There’s something magical about both places.
Whether on the pitch or off it, Kibu Vicuna continues to win hearts with his commitment, calm wisdom, and genuine love for Bengal. His journey with Diamond Harbour FC is still unfolding, but one thing is certain — his story in Indian football is far from over.
