Samir Naik Wants to Bring Football Back to Its Roots
Ray Sportz Web Desk: On a small field beside a hill in Goa, the atmosphere buzzes with energy. Standing on the sidelines is Samir Naik, former Indian international footballer and now head coach of Dempo Sports Club. Once a shining name in Indian football’s golden era, Naik is now determined to take Goan and Indian football back to its grassroots glory. Naik shared his thoughts with Ray Sportz.
Q: How has your preparation been so far with Dempo Sports Club?
Samir Naik: We’ve already started our training sessions. The players are showing great enthusiasm. Our main focus is to play organized football. Though many of our players are relatively inexperienced, we’re working hard on their fitness and coordination.
Q: After such a long time, how does it feel to return to grassroots football?
Samir Naik: It feels wonderful! This is where it all began for me — small fields, passionate youngsters, and pure love for the game. I want to give back what football gave me. It’s not about fame anymore; it’s about nurturing the next generation.
Q: What’s your first target with the team?
Samir Naik: Our goal is clear — to win the championship. We want to establish ourselves once again as one of the best clubs in Indian football. It’s not going to be easy, but with discipline and teamwork, we can make it happen.
Q: You’ll be facing strong teams like United Bengal and Mohun Bagan Colts. How do you see the challenge?
Samir Naik: Both teams are among the best in the country. I’ve played against them myself, so I know their standards. Competing with them is never easy, but it’s also the best way to test our strength and growth.
Q: How tough will it be without foreign players in your squad?
Samir Naik: Not having foreigners is definitely a challenge, but it’s also a chance to test our local talent. I believe in our boys. If they play with confidence and heart, they can overcome any hurdle.
