Proteas Script Stunning Chase to Level Series in Raipur
Ray Sportz Web Desk: In a high-scoring thriller at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium in Raipur, South Africa pulled off a remarkable chase to defeat India by four wickets in the second ODI, levelling the three-match series 1-1. Despite two sparkling Indian centuries, the visitors held their nerve to hunt down a challenging 359-run target with four balls to spare.
Batting first, India rode on a pair of majestic hundreds from Virat Kohli (102 off 93) and Ruturaj Gaikwad (105 off 83). The duo stitched together a commanding partnership that laid the platform for a big total. Captain KL Rahul added late impetus with an unbeaten 66 off just 43 deliveries, pushing India to an imposing 358 for 5 at the end of their 50 overs.
However, the pitch eased out further under lights, and the South African batters capitalized. Skipper Aiden Markram led from the front with a classy 110 from 98 balls, anchoring the chase with composure and authority. Useful contributions from Matthew Breetzke and Dewald Brevis steadied the middle overs, ensuring the required rate never spiralled out of reach.
India’s bowlers struggled to find breakthroughs at crucial intervals, and the dew factor only compounded their difficulties. As the match entered its final stretch, South Africa kept their calm, rotating the strike efficiently and punishing loose deliveries. Markram’s dismissal late in the innings brought brief hope for the hosts, but the visitors’ lower middle order sealed the chase with clinical precision.
The victory not only keeps South Africa alive in the series but also sets up an enticing decider in Visakhapatnam. India, despite a commanding performance with the bat, will rue their inability to defend another strong total—an area that will demand urgent attention ahead of the final showdown.
The stage is now set for a gripping finale as both teams eye the series trophy.
