Ray Sportz Web Desk: The battle for the top spot in the Indian Super League is set to intensify as Mohun Bagan Super Giant prepare for a high-stakes clash against Mumbai City FC, with head coach Sergio Lobera making it clear that only a win will suffice.
Addressing the media ahead of the crucial encounter, Lobera struck an uncompromising tone while reflecting on his side’s previous draw. “When you play for three points and get only one, you lose two,” he remarked, underlining his winning mentality. While the result kept Mohun Bagan at the top of the table, the coach insisted that its significance hinges entirely on securing victory in the upcoming match.
With both teams firmly in the title race, the stakes could not be higher. A win for Mohun Bagan would strengthen their grip on the summit, while Mumbai City have the opportunity to leapfrog them. In what promises to be one of the defining fixtures of the season, Lobera described the contest as “a massive game” and one he relishes.
The Spanish tactician acknowledged Mumbai City’s strength, pointing to their balanced squad, experienced coaching setup, and attacking prowess. However, he emphasized that such encounters are decided by collective effort rather than individual brilliance. “We need to compete as a team and win as a team,” he stated.
From a tactical perspective, Lobera highlighted the importance of maintaining balance and discipline. He warned of Mumbai City’s pace in transition and stressed the need for defensive compactness and control in possession. “We must dominate the ball but remain alert when we lose it,” he explained, outlining the fine margins that could determine the outcome.
Mohun Bagan have faced challenges breaking down deep defensive setups in recent matches, despite creating clear chances. Lobera admitted that improved finishing will be key. “We need to be more clinical,” he said, identifying conversion as a decisive factor going forward.
The coach also credited the passionate support of the fans, calling it a significant boost for the team, especially in high-pressure matches. Yet, he remained grounded, reiterating that performances on the pitch will ultimately decide the result.
Meanwhile, midfielder Lalengmawia Ralte echoed the team-first approach. Keeping his focus simple, Apuia said his role is to execute the coach’s plans and contribute to the team’s success. While satisfied with his performances so far, he admitted a desire to add more goals and assists to his game.
He also pointed out a tactical evolution this season, with Mohun Bagan adopting a more attacking approach compared to the previous campaign. Downplaying any individual battles, including against former teammates, Apuia emphasized that the collective objective remains paramount.
As the title race gathers momentum, all eyes will be on this crucial encounter—one that could significantly shape the destiny of the league leaders.
