ISL 2025/26: Early Strike Seals Victory for Mohun Bagan in Rain-Hit Clash
Soumyajit Dey, Guahati: Mohun Bagan Super Giant secured a hard-fought 1–0 win over NorthEast United FC in an Indian Super League fixture marred by heavy rain and difficult playing conditions.
The decisive moment came as early as the 5th minute, when Robson capitalised on a swift attacking move to slot the ball past the goalkeeper. The early breakthrough put Mohun Bagan on the front foot and ultimately proved to be the difference between the two sides.
The match at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium was significantly disrupted by persistent rainfall, which led to a temporary suspension of play. The waterlogged pitch made it challenging for both teams to maintain rhythm, forcing a more physical and cautious approach after the restart.
Despite the adverse conditions, Mohun Bagan displayed composure and tactical discipline, controlling possession for much of the game. Their defence stood firm under pressure, successfully neutralising NorthEast United’s attempts to find an equaliser.
NorthEast United showed determination, especially in the second half, but struggled to create clear-cut chances on the slippery surface. Their inability to convert opportunities cost them as Mohun Bagan held on to their slender lead.
With this victory, Mohun Bagan climbed to the top of the league standings, continuing their strong run of form. NorthEast United, meanwhile, were left searching for answers as they remain in the lower half of the table.
