Ray Sportz Web Desk: Despite a slight break in the rain, Manchester’s Old Trafford remained gloomy with no sunshine even 24 hours before the fourth Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar series. Persistent rain over the last few days has left the pitch damp and underprepared, raising questions about its behavior. With forecasts predicting rain throughout all five days, the toss is expected to be a game-changer.
Team India enters this do-or-die encounter against England facing multiple setbacks, particularly with injuries. However, there is a silver lining: wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant has recovered. In another significant development, young pacer Anshul Kamboj is likely to make his red-ball debut, replacing Akash Deep. Known for his long spells and ability to swing the ball under overcast conditions, Anshul could prove vital in Manchester’s seam-friendly weather.
Sai Sudharsan is also expected to join the playing XI in place of Nitish Kumar Reddy. However, questions remain over his batting position. Speaking at a pre-match press conference, opener Shubman Gill said, “We want Sai to bat at his preferred position,” sparking speculation that he and Karun Nair may switch spots in the batting order.
Given the damp surface, any captain winning the toss is likely to opt for fielding first. India may forgo the luxury of two spinners, potentially dropping Washington Sundar for seam-bowling all-rounder Shardul Thakur.
Tuesday’s practice session was heavily affected by rain, with only indoor nets available. Key batters including KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Karun Nair, and Gill made the most of it, while the bowlers were given a rest due to optional training. Head coach Gautam Gambhir was present throughout the indoor session, overseeing the team’s preparations.
With both weather and conditions playing unpredictable roles, the stage is set for a tense and strategic showdown at Old Trafford.
