Ray Sportz Web Desk: England took firm control of the fourth Test at Old Trafford after a dominant batting display on Day 2, finishing the day at 225 for 2 in reply to India’s first-innings total of 358.
Earlier, India, resuming at 302 for 7, were bowled out before lunch. A valiant half-century by Rishabh Pant, who returned to bat despite a toe injury, helped India add crucial runs. Pant’s gritty 54 was the highlight of the lower order, while Ben Stokes led England’s charge with the ball, claiming 5 for 62—his first five-wicket haul in Tests since 2017.
In response, England’s openers Ben Duckett (94) and Zak Crawley (84) laid a solid foundation with a 166-run partnership, taking advantage of an erratic Indian bowling attack. At stumps, Ollie Pope (20*) and Joe Root (11*) remained unbeaten, with England trailing by just 133 runs and holding eight wickets in hand.
India’s pacers failed to apply consistent pressure, and the pitch eased out as the day progressed. With momentum shifting England’s way, Day 3 will be critical for India if they hope to regain control of the match.
