Ray Sportz Web Desk: The opening day of the India–South Africa Test at the iconic Eden Gardens turned into a showcase of fast-bowling brilliance as Jasprit Bumrah dismantled the visitors with a sensational five-wicket haul. South Africa, opting to bat first after winning the toss, were bundled out for a paltry 159. India responded cautiously and finished the day at 37/1, trailing by 122 runs with nine wickets in hand.
Bumrah was the star of the day, producing a masterclass in accuracy, seam movement, and relentless pressure. His penetrating spell rattled the South African batting lineup, which never looked settled. Despite a few attempts to rebuild, no batter could convert a start into a substantial score.
India’s reply began on a shaky note as captain Rohit Sharma fell early. But Shubman Gill maintained composure at the crease, ensuring India closed the day in a comfortable position despite fading light forcing early stumps.
The pitch offered generous assistance to the fast bowlers early on, with uneven bounce and seam movement troubling the batters from both sides. As the match progresses, India will aim to build a significant first-innings lead, while South Africa face the challenge of clawing their way back into the contest after a disappointing start.
