ASIA CUP 2025: Tilak’s Heroics Seal Thrilling Asia Cup Win as Trophy Drama Overshadows Victory
Ray Sportz Web Desk: Colombo – In a nail-biting finale that epitomized the fierce rivalry between India and Pakistan, India clinched the Asia Cup title with a tense 5-wicket win, chasing down Pakistan’s modest total of 146 with just two balls to spare.
The high-octane clash, played before a packed house, saw Pakistan elect to bat first but falter under relentless Indian bowling pressure. Despite a fighting 42 from skipper Babar Azam, Pakistan were bowled out for 146, with Arshdeep Singh and Kuldeep Yadav sharing crucial wickets.
India’s chase was far from smooth as Pakistan’s pace attack struck early, reducing India to 48/3. But young southpaw Tilak Varma rose to the occasion, crafting a match-winning 69* off 53 balls, mixing grit with elegance. His partnership with Hardik Pandya (28) steadied the innings and pushed India over the line in the final over.
“This was a team effort. We knew if we held our nerve, we’d get across the line,” Tilak said after being named Player of the Match.
However, the night’s celebrations were clouded by off-field drama. The Indian team declined to receive the trophy from ACC President and Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, citing political tensions. The decision meant there was no formal presentation ceremony, an unusual and striking end to an otherwise electrifying contest.
With this win, India not only retained the Asia Cup title but also laid down a marker ahead of the upcoming World T20, reminding their arch-rivals of their depth and composure under pressure.
